24/7 Security has opened several positions for Tactical K9 Handlers, offering an excellent opportunity for experienced security professionals who hold a DH5 PSIRA certification and want to specialise in canine-support tactical roles. Below is everything you need to know about the position, the requirements, and how to apply — along with some guidance to help you put together a strong application.
About the Role
Tactical K9 Handlers work alongside trained security dogs in high-risk environments, providing armed response and specialised protection support. This is a physically demanding and highly responsible role that combines armed response duties with the handling and control of a working dog, making it suitable only for candidates who are already well established in the security industry.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this vacancy, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Grade B PSIRA registration with a DH5 certificate
- A valid Armed Response certificate
- At least three years’ experience in the security industry
- A Matric certificate (Grade 12)
- A valid driver’s licence
- A minimum of two years’ driving experience
- Valid firearm competency certificates for Handgun, Semi-Automatic (SL) Rifle, and Shotgun, issued for business purposes
- A Statement of Results from PFTC (Physical Fitness Test Certificate / accredited provider results)
- Contactable references
- A clear criminal record
Understanding the DH5 and PSIRA Grading
For candidates newer to the tactical/K9 side of the industry, it helps to understand what these terms mean:
- PSIRA Grading (Grade B): PSIRA (the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority) grades security officers from E (lowest) to A (highest) based on training, experience, and responsibility level. A Grade B qualification indicates a supervisory or specialised skill level, which is typically required for armed and tactical roles.
- DH5 Certificate: This is a specialised dog-handling qualification recognised within the private security sector, confirming that the holder has been trained to safely and effectively work with security or detection dogs in operational settings.
- PFTC (Physical Fitness Test Certificate): Tactical and armed response roles often require proof of physical fitness from an accredited testing centre, since the job demands quick response, endurance, and the ability to control a working animal under pressure.
Employers in this field prioritise candidates who hold all of these credentials up front, since tactical K9 units generally cannot provide this training on the job — it must already be in place before you apply.
How to Apply
Interested candidates who meet all of the above requirements should send their CV to:
📧 viviennev@24-7security.co.za
Closing date: 15 July 2026
Please note: Only candidates who meet every listed requirement should apply. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you have not heard back within five days of the closing date, please consider your application unsuccessful.
Tips for a Stronger Application
- List your certifications clearly at the top of your CV — PSIRA grade, DH5, Armed Response, and firearm competencies should be easy for a recruiter to spot at a glance.
- Include certificate numbers and expiry dates where possible, as this speeds up the verification process.
- Attach certified copies of your PSIRA certificate, firearm competencies, driver’s licence, and PFTC results if the employer requests supporting documents.
- Keep your references up to date and let them know they may be contacted.
- Double-check your criminal record status before applying, since a clear record is a non-negotiable requirement for armed and tactical positions.
